Theatrical contact lenses are favorites for costume parties. And for a good reason - nothing can make your costume seem more real than a pair of bright inhuman eyes. However, with so many special effect contacts available it is important to know how to select good ones.

All special effect contacts are soft contact lenses. This means that, with proper care and cleaning, you will hardly notice there is anything in your eyes. Most people can wear costume contact lenses without any problems.

Theatrical lenses come in hundreds of exciting designs. You can get cat's eye contacts, red or black spirals, wolf eyes, bloodshot eyes, vampire, white-out, black-out or even an American flag design.

Happy Halloween!

Halloween Costumes For Two

Couples costumes are some of the funnest costumes out there, and the easiest to do. If you're tired of the same old typical Halloween costumes - the vampire, witch, or mummy - then a change of pace might be for you. It also seems that everyone just "has" to wear the latest movie craze costume as well, like a "Batman Begins" costume.

All you need is to be just a little crafty and handy with a sewing machine, and many amusing costume ideas can be pretty simple to make. Use your ingenuity and creativity and you should be able to come up with quite a few ideas. On the other hand, if you're busy or not so handy, maybe a friend of yours can help. And if you've got the money you can also buy many great costumes online or through a costume shop. Of course this option costs more, but some of these costumes are very good and at reasonable prices.

Perfect for those couples that like to dress up together!

Plug and Socket

The kids (thankfully) won't get this one, but I think it's pretty funny. You Need: black cloth material, heavy white iron-on interfacing, large square piece of foam (enough to fit around hips), scrap cardboard, gold colored paint, hot glue and gun, black long sleeved shirt, black pants.

1. For the electrical outlet costume, measure from your knees up to your shoulders, then double this length and cut. For the width, measure from shoulder tip to shoulder tip and add an inch. Cut your current length of material to the proper width.

2. Fold the material in half width-wise (ie. if you hold the material in front of you it still falls the full length from shoulder to knees). Cut a hole out of the folded end so your head will fit through. Hem the opening.

3. Slip the material over your head so that it's inside out. Carefully pin the material together 3 to 4 inches below your underarms on each side. Remove the costume and sew seams from the bottom up to your underarm pins. Hem the bottom of the costume.

4. Cut out 2 large socket shapes from the white iron-on interfacing. Carefully cut two rectangles out of the inside of each socket shape (where you "plug" would go). Iron the sockets to the front of the outfit, one above the other.

5. Dress in a black shirt and black pants (or skirt). Slip the costume on and you're done.

6. For the Plug Costume, take the white foam and carefully cut a whole through the back third of the foam piece (not in the center - you want more foam in front to act as the "plug"). Step into the foam and slide it up over your hips. You made need to adjust the opening to fit. If necessary, make two black straps and attach them with a glue gun to the inside front and back openings of the foam and slip the straps over your shoulders to hold the foam in place.

7. Cut 2 "metal plug connections" from the scrap cardboard. Paint with gold paint. Let dry and then carefully slice into the front of the foam to position the plugs. Hot glue into place. Your "plug" costume is finished.

Traffic Lights

Materials needed: yellow cotton fabric, 2 squares each of red, green and dark yellow felt, matching colored thread or iron-on double-sided interfacing.

1. As above, cut a tabard from the yellow cotton. Measure from knee to shoulder, double the length and cut. Figure out the width by measuring from shoulder to shoulder and cut your length of material to the proper width.

2. Hem all edges. Fold in half and cut a semi-circle on the fold to fit your head through. Hem the opening. Cut two 4" wide strips of yellow material about 5" to 6" in length (this will vary depending on how large or small you are). Slip the costume on and pin the straps to the back and front on each side near your waist. Sew into place. You might also choose to hem the sides as in Step 3 of Plug and Socket Costume.

3. Cut a red circle, dark yellow circle and green circle. Position on the front of the costume. You can either sew these one or use double-faced iron-on interfacing to secure. Wear black pants and a black, long sleeved jersey underneath.

Tacky Tourists

Items needed: white Bermuda shorts, tacky Hawaiian shirts, tacky sandals (for the men, don't forget to wear socks with your sandals), beach comber hats, plastic flowered leis', white zinc ointment, camera, straw beach bag, large funky sunglasses.

1. Just dress up. Add some of the zinc across your noses (don't want sunburn!) and you're good to go.

All it takes is a look around your house to find "pairs" of items that could be turned into funny Halloween costumes that would be perfect to wear as a couple this year.

One last note - the most creative costumes are the ones that only your close friends would understand, but that have a more obvious meaning.

Have a great and safe Halloween!

Halloween Contact Lenses

Ever wanted to spice up your look for Halloween, or to do something unique for parties? Have you ever considered contact lenses to alter the way other people perceive your eyes, or to add to a great costume? With cheap halloween contact lenses becoming more common than ever, this year is a great opportunity to do just that.

Contact lenses are simply discs, usually made out of plastic, that stay on your eye with the help of suction from the eyeball and tear fluid that attaches them to the surface. This is why blinking or eye drops often alleviate contact problems. They don't fall off and follow your eye movements, making them ideal for those with glasses.

Contact lenses are mostly corrective in nature; that is, usually worn by people with glasses. However, not everyone wears them to fix vision problems. There are lenses available to change the color of your eyes, to help you see better during athletic events, and for Halloween costumes. The key word to look for when adding to your costume is cosmetic lenses or theatrical lenses. One popular brand is Wild Eyes by CIBA Vision, which also makes regular contact lenses.

When choosing lenses of this type, it is important that you are properly fitted for them by an optometrist. When you blink, the colored part of the contact lens may slide over your pupil, obscuring sight, a common occurrence that can easily be avoided. It is also important that you obtain a prescription for even decorative lenses, as it is required by the FDA. Also make sure you buy them in credible sources such as online sites that are secure or an optometrist's office.

One type of popular lens for Halloween is cat eyes, which make the pupil look larger than it really is by covering it in black and surrounding the white of the eye with yellow. Another cheap Halloween contact lens is Hypnotica. Hypnotica is another great choice for dressing up as a warlock or witch. It creates a swirl of black and white in your eye that will mesmerize bystanders. If you are going for the cartoon effect, go for knockout lenses, which "replace" your pupil with a black "X", as often seen in cartoon shows.

Other standout choices include red eyes, orange eyes, zebra patterns, spider webs, smileys, and stars. All of these are great choices to match with a variety of costumes. Just make sure the party you are attending isn't held in pitch-black conditions!

If you simply want to change the color of your eye to match your costume, tamer options are available. These lenses are also colored, but only so much as to change your eye color to other normal colors.
There are several options with these:
  • visibility tints,
  • enhancement tints,
  • color tints.
All provide a different level of change, and will show differently. For example, if you naturally have brown eyes but would like to really stand out, changing your eyes to violet or green will make everyone notice.

As with all contact lens choices, even if you do not have vision problems, it is important to see an optometrist and explore your options, as well as seek advice about various colors of lenses that will work best for you.

If you choose to wear lenses with your costume this Halloween, don't share them with anyone and keep them clean, so you don't wind up with a monster of an eye infection!

Happy Halloween!

Halloween Face Paint and Make Up

Creating Halloween special effects with makeup is much easier than most people think. You will not even need a fancy face painting kit because these effects can be created using items you already have in your cosmetics bag or kitchen cupboard.

Here are some tips and tricks:

Facial effects
1. Create a pale look for zombies and ghouls with a very light foundation. For a ghost white complexion, combine white chalk and vegetable shortening and apply evenly to the entire face.

2. Achieve instant age by dusting hair and clothing with baby powder. Create dark undereye circles and the illusion of wrinkles with blue and purple eye shadow.

3. To make homemade Frankenstein neck bolts, paint Styrofoam packing peanuts with black paint and adhere to the neck with corn syrup or a homemade paste made from flour and water.

4. To create warts, adhere peppercorns or small pieces of styrofoam to the face, again with flour and water or corn syrup.

Hair and Eyebrows
1. To create facial hair, moisten a sponge and use it to apply dark eye shadow or cake mascara. Blot the sponge wherever you wish to make mustaches, sideburns, and beards. Or use it over the entire face to darken your complexion.

2. For flowing beards or crazy eyebrows, unravel and frizz a string of yarn or crepe wool. Then apply with a mixture of water and flour. At the end of the night, the "hair" can be easily removed with soap and water.

3. Create even more eyebrow effects by hiding existing eyebrows with a flour and water paste. Cover the paste with foundation and draw new shapes.

4. Want no hair at all? Cover your scalp with the toe end of a pair of pantyhose. Glue on more crepe wool or yarn to create your own look.

Wounds
1. Use blue, green and yellow eye shadow for bruises.

2. To create the illusion of an open wound, apply a combination of red food coloring and petroleum jelly to your skin. (A little powdered cocoa will darken the edges.) For a festering wound, apply baking soda, then thinly coat with vinegar from a spray bottle. Let dry.

3. Making fake blood is easy. Mix white corn syrup and water in a 2 to 1 proportion. Add drops of red food coloring, along with a few drops of blue and yellow, until you have achieved just the right shade.

Experiment with other products in your kitchen cupboard, and always make sure to do a trial run before the big night. It is also a good idea to set the makeup with a light application of baby powder so it does not run.

When all the haunting is complete, all you need is a bit of makeup remover and soap and water.

Happy Halloween!

Choosing A Halloween Costume That Is Right For You

Choosing a Halloween costume that’s right for you sounds like an easy task, but in fact it can often be the source of endless worry. Most of the time, you want something that’s a bit sexy as well as practical for the event that you are attending, as well as something that is original and clever. Most importantly though, you need to find something that fits well and suits you, especially if you are looking to fully enjoy your Halloween party.

So, how do you choose a Halloween costume that’s right for you? What should you make sure of before committing to any particularly costume?

There are literally millions of different commercially produced Halloween costumes, as well as many you can fashion from bits of material and things around the house on your own. Whether you are into high fashion or just looking for something to spice up your Halloween party, there are an endless supply of potential costumes to choose from, which can often make the decision making process quite complicated. Amongst other things, you need to make sure that you can find a costume that you are comfortable in, to allow you to enjoy your evening to the fullest without cursing your costume selection.

Comfort is a critical aspect of choosing a successful costume, and most of the time your perception of how a garment will wear should be sufficient to give you an idea as to whether or not it would be right for you. As a general rule of thumb, avoid bulky or heavy costumes for indoor parties – yes folks, that means the giant dice you had planned, or that gorilla suit is a no-no if you’re likely to be dancing indoors. If you’re planning to go trick or treating, those skimpy witches outfits aren’t ideal for keeping you warm on the cold October nights. A bit of common sense should see you making a choice that’s suitable for your particular event.

As a word of caution, a costume hire shop will often require a substantial deposit to be put down against damage to their goods. You should take care not to damage the costumes whilst in your possession, and any imperfection in the costume should be noted by you beforehand to avoid losing all or part of the deposit you have put down on the costume.

Finding the right Halloween costume for you isn’t as easy as it sounds, and you can quite easily end up in a muddle trying to mix and match between various outfits that you’d like to wear. Provided you choose something that is appropriate for the occasion and that compliments your appearance and body shape, as well as allowing you to move freely without restriction, you should be okay. But remember, above all, Halloween is about having fun with your friends and family, and this should be reflected in the costume choice that you make for your special occasion.

Happy Halloween!

Halloween Costume Buyers Guide

Halloween is one of our most treasured national celebrations, probably largely due to the fact that it’s fun to dress up. It’s an excuse for parties nationwide, and most of us will at some point have to think about what to wear to a Halloween function.

From there we are faced with two options: to either buy a costume, or hire a costume from a local fancy dress shop. As far as value for money is concerned, buying a Halloween costume is a great way to get the most out of your money.

Buying a Halloween costume is a great way to save money on what is otherwise a yearly expense. By splashing out on a costume that you can wear time and time again, you can avoid having to pay for hire every year as Halloween approaches. However, there are a number of important considerations to take into account when buying your costume to make sure that it does indeed provide the value you are looking for over a rented costume every year.

The danger is that once you opt for a particular costume, it then becomes yet another unworn garment in the wardrobe because it doesn’t fit too well, or because it is uncomfortable to wear. To achieve the optimum value from your costume, you need to take care to avoid these problems as you buy. Make sure any costume that you opt for is both a good fit, comfortable to wear, and something you will take pleasure in wearing to functions in future years before you commit to buying, to ensure that your investment has indeed been good value for money.

Another thing to consider in your Halloween costume is durability. In other words, how long do you require the costume to last in order to allow you to reap value from beyond the cost of hiring? Two years? Five years? Whatever the answer, you need to make sure that any garment you opt for is well made and designed to be worn. Look for something that isn’t likely to be destroyed by normal wear and tear, and examine the stitching where possible for any flaws that could result in damage to the costume later down the line.

Buying a Halloween costume is a big step, particularly if you are looking for something to wear every year. At the expense of variety comes good value in your costume, but its important to remember why you’re buying. Find a costume that you enjoy, and that fits you well, you should be set up to reap the rewards of your prudent move year by year. By ensuring you’ve covered all the bases, your costume should be your number one choice for future events, rather than consigned to the back of your closet.

Halloween Traditions and Kids Costumes

What started centuries ago in Ireland as All Saints Day to honor Catholic Saints, became All Hallows Eve and evolved to a strange ritual with an almost slang expression, Halloween. Rather than warding off evil spirits, Halloween in modern times for kids is more of an opportunity to scare and be scared safely. It is the only celebration of the year where whole communities become one big family and youths walk the dark streets to collect candy and show off their kids Halloween costumes.

Although few people know much about Halloween, it is one of those events that captures the imagination of many. It has spawned a multimillion dollar industry built around merchandise such as Halloween costumes, candy confectionaries, theatre and movie entertainment, and for collecting funds for charities. It is one of the few times kids get free reign of their imagination and can let loose their inhibitions. At school, Halloween is celebrated with plays and games, and visits outside the school to haunted houses.

Halloween Origins-The Celtic tradition of Halloween is thought to have been brought to America and Canada from Irish immigrants in the 1840's. Long ago the Celtic people set October 31st as summer's end and the beginning of a new year. They had belief where the disembodied spirits of all those who had died in the last year would return in search of living bodies to possess for the next year. They extinguished all lights and fires and made their homes cold. They would don ghoulish costumes and parade around the neighborhood to frighten away those spirits looking for bodies to possess.

The Jack' O Lantern is perhaps the foremost symbol of Halloween closely followed by ghosts. Before modern manufactured Halloween costumes, the ghost was one of the most common costume themes for the Hallow's Eve evening out. The Jack O' Lantern comes from Celtic lore about a hard drinking and stingy Irishman named Jack who met the devil in a pub on Halloween. Jack was a tricky soul and was about to fall prey to the devil after drinking too much.

He made a deal with the devil by offering up his soul for one more drink. The devil had to change himself into a coin so Jack could pay for that drink. But Jack just pocketed the coin in a sack that had a silver cross in it and the Devil couldn't do a thing. Later, the Devil returned to collect Jack's soul while he was walking a country road in the Irish countryside. The ever-tricky Jack asked the Devil to climb a tree and pick an apple and the Devil complied. When the Devil was in the tree, Jack carved a cross in the tree so the Devil could not come back down.

When Jack finally died years later, he went to heaven but was turned away because of all his drinking, tricking and miserable ways. Even at the gates of hell, Jack was turned away by the Devil and told to go back whence he came. Jack asked the devil for a light because the road back was so dark. The Devil tossed him a burning ember from his hell fire and jack carried it in a hollowed out turnip he was eating. Ever since, as legend has it, Jack is wandering around in the dark with his lantern.

In North America, turnips were not in huge supply. Instead pumpkins were used for Jack O' Lanterns and are a big part of the Halloween tradition today. Irish residents were always afraid of Jack returning or some other ghost of the departed would appear. They would wear costumes to frighten them away and would also leave food at their doorstep to keep the ghosts occupied. That was the start of the trick or treat ritual that most kids take part in today when they walk the neighborhood streets on Hallow's Eve. The trick part was probably in honor of old Jack.

Today, the celebration is fairly tame but kids still walk the streets wearing ghoulish clothing and knocking on neighbor's doors and there's plenty of parties across the country. There's pranks too, which was a part of the Celtic tradition too. Probably more of Jack's work.

Halloween Costumes-On the topic of Halloween costumes, there are hundreds of ideas for costumes and many people enjoy making their kids costumes. There's always the Darth Vador, Pirate, Witch, Superman, Princess, Batman, Skeleton, Ninja, Cowboy, Dracula costumes, and many other costume themes born out of the movie industry. This year's preferences may be the Pirates of the Caribbean, Harry Potter, Narnia Medieval Warriors, but the cost of this apparel might frighten you.

For a less amount you might want to consider sports costumes. There are youths sports outfits that you can use as Halloween costumes or even as kids pajamas. Not only are kids thrilled dressing up as a football player for instance, but they can actually sleep in them after the Halloween parties and tradition is over. If you have several kids to put in costumes this Halloween, you might want to make them last a while. And kids rarely want to put on the same costume they had last year, and they grow out of them too.

Instead, you might want to make the most of your purchase by having something they can use again. Football uniforms with NFL football team and College Football team logos and player numbers are a big thrill for boys. Some uniforms even come with shoulder pads and plastic helmets.

Yes, Halloween is a fun time and you don't have to overdo it with the usual ghosts and goblin theme, or by buying the latest expensive Hollywood promoted monster or slasher character and related merchandise. The football costumes actually might keep the memories of Halloween alive longer.

Happy Halloween!

Thinking Up Adult Halloween Costumes

You don't need to have excellent sewing skills to create adult Halloween costumes that will make you stand out from the crowd.

As a matter of fact, you won't even need a needle or thread. All you really need is some creativity, a friend you can borrow something from, a closet full of clothes and easy access to a thrift shop.

This Halloween, don't be lazy and simply toss a sheet over your head claiming to be a ghost. Instead, look in your very own closet for inspiration! Sift through the clothes, look at the colors and try to come up with something creative. Work with what you have and if you need help bring the most outrageous (or good humored) friend help you come up with your own creation.

And by the way...

Don't limit yourself to a particular mental image of what Halloween should be. The best costume I ever saw was a homemade crash test dummy costume! Just remember...you can be funny, silly, homeless, homely, heck you can be Becky from down on the farm!

Let your imagination run wild! Don't forget to go through your mother's old costume jewelry and big hair accessories from the 80's or any other decade that would otherwise never see the light of day.

Begin by sorting your clothing and accessories into themed piles and further sort from that. Mix and match until you find something that jumps out and grabs you, hopefully it won't be last years costume.

Once you've selected your overall theme, you can accessorize and develop more specific pieces to go along with your costume.

If at any time during the process you find yourself missing accessories or certain gear to complete your costume, head on down to your local thrift shop.

Thrift shops can be a great source of ideas for a Halloween costume. Just browse through the racks and see if anything sparks your imagination.

If you have a costume in mind, be sure to focus on what you need but also take notice of suitable substitutions! Remember, it's a Halloween costume, not a formal event. It's perfectly okay to make up your own creations.

What's important is that you're having fun in the creation of your masterpiece costume! Keep it light and fun...who cares if no one can guess who you are? One thing is certain; you can bet you won't find anyone with the same costume - you'll be one of a kind!

Happy Halloween!

Buying Halloween Costumes and Accessories

Halloween is more than just trick-or-treating; Halloween is a time for children to dress up as their favorite super hero or movie character. Halloween costumes were traditionally designed to be ‘scary’, but there has been a steady change in that line of thought. If you are looking for a Halloween costume for your children and don’t know what is popular this season, here are a few ideas to help you out.

Spiderman
The Spiderman trilogy was an instant success with adults and children alike. Apart from Spiderman costumes, "costume based Spiderman villains" like the Hob Goblin and Venom are also popular this season. A hot Spiderman costume is the black Spiderman costume from Spiderman 3. Make sure you buy Spiderman gloves with the costume they are usually sold separately.

Star Wars
Star Wars costumes have been popular with children for a long time now and there is a wide variety of costumes to choose from for both boys and girls. Star Wars costumes are well known for the amazing variety of accessories that are available with the costumes. Some of the popular accessories include the Darth Vader helmet, fake light sabre and Anakin Skywalker’s glove. The Princess Leia costume is extremely popular with girls.

Pirates of the Caribbean
Like the Spiderman trilogy, Pirates of the Caribbean costumes are also a hot choice this season. Popular Pirates of the Caribbean costumes include Jack Sparrow (captain) costumes. Make sure you buy the proper accessories to go with the Jack Sparrow costume, if you are not sure what you need just ask for a Pirate Play Set. This Pirate Play Set includes a plastic toy gun, plastic dagger and eye patch. Make sure you buy a pair of boots to go with the costume as well.

Another popular costume from the Pirates of the Caribbean series is the Captain Morgan costume that comes with a full length jacket much like those worn by English gentlemen in the movie. There are also pirate costumes available for girls.

Shrek
Shrek is perhaps the only animation movie to span a trilogy. The most popular costume from the Shrek series is the green Shrek costume that comes with a Shrek face mask. Just like the movie, there are also Princess Fiona costumes available for girls. If you loved Shrek, there are Donkey costumes available for your dog!

Aladdin
The timeless classic from Walt Disney was an instant hit with kids. Princess Jasmine costumes are extremely popular with girls, and the latest Aladdin costume available is the Genie costume that comes with a face mask and fake muscles.

If you are still not sure what you need, you can search for Halloween costumes online. In fact, you can actually order Halloween costumes and accessories online. All you need is your child’s size and you can have the latest costumes delivered to your doorstep. Most websites accept major credit cards and costumes are usually shipped out the same day. If you are buying more than one costume you might be eligible for free shipping too.
